"I am flying with the unicorns."

Her name was Denise, and she embodied everything that kindness, love, and hope stood for.

From the moment she entered the world, it was as though she carried an invisible lantern, glowing with warmth and generosity.

Denise was not just a person; she was a gift, a soul who had an uncanny ability to make everyone she encountered feel seen, heard, and loved.

Denise’s life changed at the age of 12 when she was diagnosed with leukemia. The diagnosis shattered her family’s world, as if everything they knew had been ripped away in an instant. But in the devastation, they found strength in each other. They knew that Denise was no ordinary girl—her spirit was unshakable, and with her determination and their love, they held onto the belief that she would find a way to overcome it somehow.

Denise found joy in creating. Some of her favorite things to do were playing the guitar, writing poetry, making macramé planters, and designing stained glass. She loved pouring her energy into these crafts, losing herself in the colors, textures, and melodies. Her poetry was especially dear to her. She wrote for her nurses, aunts, and most of all, her mother, capturing her emotions and reflections in ways that touched the hearts of everyone around her.

The journey was not easy. At an age when fitting in seemed so important, Denise faced the harsh reality of being different. Losing her hair to treatment, enduring stares, and feeling the sting of isolation could have broken her spirit. But Denise never let it. She carried herself with grace and quiet confidence, inspiring those around her to see beyond appearances.

As her condition worsened, Denise continued to focus on the happiness of others. She never let go of her mission to bring joy, beauty, and connection into the world. Whether through a simple melody strummed on her guitar, a heartfelt poem, or a handcrafted piece of art, she left pieces of her heart with everyone she touched.

Denise passed away at 17, leaving behind a void that could never truly be filled. Yet, her legacy lives on through giving kids a place to feel secure, safe, joyful, and to let their worries go away—a place where they can simply be kids again.

Denise’s life, though far too short, was a masterpiece. Her heart was a song that played on, long after the music had stopped. And her light, the light she carried with her all those years, has never dimmed.
